Character Naming Guidelines
Name Requirements
To maintain narrative cohesion and immersion within the Landfall SMP, all characters must adhere to the following naming guidelines. Names play a crucial role in shaping the lore and setting of the server, and ensuring consistency helps to preserve a believable and engaging world.
1. Lore-Appropriate Names
- Character names must fit within the established lore and cultural inspirations of Landfall SMP.
- Avoid modern, meme-based, or immersion-breaking references (e.g., "JohnWick420" or "Sussy Baka").
- Names should be immersive and plausible within the setting.
2. Originality and Uniqueness
- Names must be distinct from existing characters, major historical figures, or prominent NPCs.
- Directly copying names from real-world figures or major franchises is strongly discouraged and will be reviewed case by case. If found too similar, players may be asked to adjust their character’s name.
- Slight variations of well-known names (e.g., "Jonn Snow" for "Jon Snow") will not be accepted.
3. Standard Naming Conventions
- Character names should follow a standard structure:
- "First Last" (e.g., Avery Ehrveil).
- "First M. Last" (e.g., Avery R. Ehrveil).
- Rare exceptions: Where appropriate, names may follow cultural conventions such as "Name du/von Place" (e.g., Isolde du Roscarte), but only if the location exists in the canon.
4. Titles and Honorifics
- Titles and honorifics are not part of a character’s official name.
- Example: Avery R. Ehrveil is correct. Not Empress Avery R. Ehrveil.
- Titles must be earned in-game and should not be included in the official character name upon creation.
5. Cultural Consistency
- Characters should have names that align with their in-game culture or region.
- If a character is from an established nation or faction, their name is encouraged to reflect its linguistic and cultural themes.
- If you are unsure about naming conventions, consult faction leaders or server administrators for guidance.
6. Avoidance of Joke or Immersion-Breaking Names
- Names should not be overtly humorous, anachronistic, or disruptive to immersion.
- Names that contain references to internet culture, modern slang, or explicit content are strictly prohibited.
7. Nicknames and Aliases
- Nicknames and aliases must be logical extensions of a character’s given name.
- Titles and honorifics are not applied to nicknames.
8. Name Changes and Retcons
- A character’s name is considered mostly permanent once introduced into the canon.
- Exceptions may occur naturally, such as through marriage or adoption.
- Minor spelling adjustments for consistency may be requested, but full renaming requires admin approval and must have a strong in-game justification.
- Retconning a name entirely will only be considered in rare cases and must align with established lore.
Admins reserve the right to review and reject names that do not adhere to these guidelines. If a name is flagged for revision, players will be given an opportunity to adjust it to better fit within the server’s narrative framework. Continued violations will result in a randomly generated name being locked on the player.
